About Me April 7, 2009

Dear friend,

As another year approached, I knew I wanted to find something spectacular to do for my time off from school, especially the summer months.

One day, as I passed the bulletin boards in the student union of my college, I noticed a sign for this organization called Crossroads. I knew I had seen the sign before, but that day–it really caught my attention. I read over the very detailed page. It was a walk across America! How cool is that? Not too many other college students can say that they ventured out to the ends of the country.

I took the sign back to my dorm room and looked up the Crossroads website. It’s an incredible organization that assists with the cross-country trip of people ages 18-30 who want to proclaim the right to life and work to build the culture of life. The organization uses peaceful praying and sacrificing, in addition to witnessing to over 3,500 miles of American property to spread the pro-life message.

I decided to apply for a walking position the next day. Two months later, I received my acceptance letter. It was still early, so I set the letter aside and went on with life.

Over the next few months life changed quite a bit. I found out I could graduate a year early and study abroad a semester in Austria. My car also broke down during Christmas break which caused a lot of problems. I decided that walking with Crossroads this summer wasn’t the best idea after all. The most reasonable decision would be to stay at home and work all summer. Not very exciting, but logical.

I had my mind set. Over spring break I even applied for jobs back home. I was offered an internship in D.C. for the summer as well, but turned it down because I needed to save as much money as possible.

People from Crossroads had called me a few times, but I was in class. So, one day I decided that I was going to finally call them back and explain how I can’t participate this summer…that maybe I can defer my position until next summer. I was sad about turning them down…but, I knew I needed to make this decision. I prayed about it quite often and felt very confused.

I took the plunge on a Friday afternoon and called Crossroads. The guy on the phone was very persistent. For every excuse I had…he had an answer. I told him I would pray about it more and make my final decision when he visited my school the next week.

As soon as I hung up, something clicked inside my body. “I’m going to walk across America this summer…no matter what,” I thought to myself.

So, there I was. A new plan, yet responsibilities that still hung over my head. As stressful as the whole situation was…I was seemingly calm. I heard God say, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of everything. Trust in Me.”

And so I do…

Sincerely,

Michelle

Persistence can be a good thing. The gentleman on the phone obviously really wanted you to have the chance to experience something amazing.
