Almost there! July 28, 2009

Just a short update:

We have less than 3 weeks left before we complete our journey! The days and nights have been long and tiresome…the people we’ve met have been inspiring–One thing we know for sure: We’re not walking across America for ourselves…we’re doing it for those who won’t even get the chance to walk or stand–for the voiceless. A thought came to my mind the other day: We were praying at an abortion clinic in Indianapolis last Saturday and on the way there our host mom was talking about the specifics of this clinic. She told us it was a smaller clinic and that it performed about 100 abortions a week.

Wow…100 lives.

You know, if there was a plane crash tomorrow that killed 100 lives…America would be distraught! But, what about the babies we’re killing? Aren’t their lives important too? I truly believe that the first step in making a difference and enabling change is to simply be aware of what is going on.

I challenge you to get involved in the pro-life movement in your own way. Obviously most people don’t have three months to give up of their lives to walk across the country acting as silent witnesses. But, I challenge you to walk with us–small or large…every ounce of involvement makes the greatest difference.

Together, we can turn this culture of death we live in…into a culture of life.

Thanks for your support…and I pray for each and everyone of you.

Until next time, Michelle

Moving On: Sad Story July 19, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michelle @ 5:34 pm

Well, yesterday was a very sad day. We found out that our beloved assistant walk leader—David—was being transferred to the southern walk. The southern walk is in need of male walkers…so, they had to send David. We really miss him and hope he comes back soon!

I don’t have too much to say today…since I just updated like 2 days ago. But, I did want to mention all the neat things that have happened in the past few days. Yesterday at morning mass we ran into these three ladies that were walking around the church. They offered to make us dinner and bring it to the RV park. When day shift arrived at the park that evening—the ladies had made a feast for us! The food was super yummy and just what we needed after a long day of walking! They were so sweet and generous! And then this morning at Mass…they had baked us muffins and coffee cake for the road! Crazy!

It is truly amazing that so many people are so giving. Crossroads has shown me that really good people do exist in this world!

Well, this weekend we are staying in the wonderful city of St. Louis, Missouri. Josh had told us that we were staying in a convent this weekend, whereas the boys were staying in a seminary! So many things were running through our minds when we discovered this fact. But, let me tell you—all of my assumptions were incorrect! The sisters are incredibly charitable and kind! And the place we are staying at…is pretty sweet! They gave us our own mini apartment down in the basement. It has couches, tons of beds, and three bathrooms! So fun!

Tonight we had some free time…so, Josh decided that we should go bowling! Tons of fun! I mean—I pretty much kicked everyone’s butt. Haha. We played two games and had a blast making fun of everyone’s ridiculous gutterballs. The night was still young when we left…so we decided to find an empty parking lot, turn up the music in the van, leave the doors open and dance till our hearts were content! As a group, we danced to the Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha Slide, and Macarena! Haha! So many cars stopped and watched us. It was a hilarious sight! Matt and Chris still had their Pro-Life shirts on!

We head out tonight to continue walking in Illinois! Only 4 weeks left…

Until next time, Michelle

Hello 8th week! Bring on the humidity! July 16, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michelle @ 12:38 am

I thought I had already started this post…but, somehow I can’t find the saved version. Oh well, here goes try #2.

Well, I’m on night shift this week. It doesn’t seem as horrible this time around as it has been in the past. It may be how we are dividing up the miles. Normally, a guy and girl walk together for 7 miles—they get dropped off and walk for almost 2 hours until they reach the van where the other two people are sleeping. This makes for a very long and dreadful night. However, last week one of the boys came up with this brilliant idea to have each guy do 3 miles by themselves for every 2 miles a girl does—where the van follows behind the girl the entire way. This just makes your shift fly by. So, you could say that I’m enjoying it.

Right now, I am sitting in the RV in a campground that is about 45 miles west of St. Louis. Andrea and Matt (the new guy that we picked up in Kansas City) are sleeping here…and Josh is sleeping by the pool (go figure!). I wish I was sleeping—since we FINALLY have air conditioning. It, along with the generator and fridge, have been broken for a little while. So, we spent all day Monday and Tuesday searching for a place to get them fixed. We did…and then not even 8 hours later—the AC broke again. But, Matt somehow found the problem and managed to get it working for now. Like we always say…Welcome to Crossroads.

Speaking of broken things…I think my ipod is possessed. Right now, it has a red circle on the screen and won’t do anything. A couple of weeks ago it was shorting out every cord that I plugged it up to. Hmmm…if you have one you’d like to donate to me, let me know!

So, I’m trying to think about where I left off on my last post. I’m sure I haven’t talked about the 7th week yet. Well, I’m writing this on Word because we don’t really have internet here. But, I managed to sweet talk the lady at the front desk into giving me 60 free minutes of online time.

This past weekend we were in Kansas City, the previous weekend we were in Lincoln, Nebraska. I must admit…we seem to be flying through Missouri—especially compared to the 2 weeks it took us to get out of Nevada. This coming weekend we’ll be in St. Louis to speak at churches. Hopefully I’ll get to see Natalie and Brian (friends of mine from when I went to school in Missouri). I think the team may take some time to visit the arch. I wish they could get to experience the City Museum—but, I know it’s expensive and time-consuming…but SO much fun! Maybe our host family will take us.

Random: I have the funkiest tan lines. My favorite: sock line! It is seriously like night and day difference! Hahaha! Oh, and I have a neckline tan too. So funny.

Anyways, the film crew was here this past weekend. It was the last time we’ll see them until DC! Crazy! They took us around Kansas City to a water fountain, Union Station, night walking and some other things. The owner of a famous bbq place: Jack Stacks, hosted us over at his house on Sunday night. That was a lot of fun…the baked beans were the best I have ever had in my life!!!

I think one of the coolest parts of Crossroads is meeting soooo many people all over the country. It’s a great networking tool. And—you really get to hone your public speaking skills. The worst part = not being able to keep up with hygiene. And if you know me—you know that is kind of an issue. We started this new thing where we only get to take showers on Wednesdays during the week. I’m not gonna lie—that is pretty gross. :-(   I have never smelt that dirty in my entire life! I’m turning into one of those nature-type of people.

Jessica left this afternoon for a week. I’m so jealous of her vacation! But, I bet she is also kind of sad that she’s going to miss out on a week’s worth of events. Her mother and grandmother picked her up today so they could spend some time in St. Louis. Fun fun!

Oh, so—last week (Tuesday I think), we went to Mass…somewhere in Kansas (Maybe—my days and states are running together)…well anyways, we met this lady who invited us to her lake house for dinner! Josh said that if we got 40 miles in on day shift that we could go. So, we pumped out those miles and got to spend the evening on the lake! We went jet skiing and paddle boating! Ahh, the parts of summer that I miss.

You know what I think is pretty cool??? Well, we went to pray in front of Planned Parenthood this past weekend in Kansas City…and when we got there…there were so many young adults praying. It was truly awesome to see the youth getting involved in the pro-life movement! Lots of Focus missionaries. I decided that if I can’t get into Law School because of financial issues or what-not, that I am just going to take some time to participate in various missionary programs similar to the one that I am doing now…but, maybe not so much on the physical exertion side.  :-)

Well, I’m sure that I have tons of more things to say (of course), but time is limited because we have to make dinner soon. But, I hope you enjoy this little update.

Until next time, Michelle

More than half-way through… July 5, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michelle @ 10:24 pm

I’m probably going to regret staying up and writing this—especially since it is nearly 1am and we have to be up for church around 6am. Sheesh. But, I need to keep you guys updated!

So, we’re officially starting our 7th week and officially about to leave Lincoln, Nebraska. I don’t care for this city as much as I did with North Platte. Everyone is just so friendly on the western side of this state!

I feel this week that I have sooooo much to say, yet–not enough words to say it all at once. I do hope that everyone had an awesome Independence day though!

Well, this was a very productive week. We made it past the state line. :-) We also pulled a couple 50 mile shifts this past week. You’re always super exhausted afterwards…but, you feel so accomplished!

A couple of the girls and I were talking…and we feel like the living conditions just keep getting worse and worse. It’s kinda funny actually! Most of the time…we just call it a sacrifice. But, this weekend was seriously a bit on the horrible side. So, I ended up staying back on Friday to go to the ‘host family’s house’ with the night shift…instead of walking with the day shift. We were supposed to be at the abortion clinic in Lincoln by 2pm to pray for awhile. It was really neat getting to visit the pregnancy resource center that was next door! I did a bit of filming on Friday as well. Well, 4 o’clock rolled around and we headed to the house we were staying in for the weekend. Apparently, someone donated a vacant house to my team for our weekend in Lincoln. We were pretty stoked for this…because we wanted some time to unwind. Lo and behold—it was definitely not anything any of us expected. We walked into this super old creepy house for the biggest surprise of our Crossroads life. Wood floors and no furniture…not to mention—no hot water! It was a bit hard to laugh off because we were a bit disappointed. Normally, the weekends and our host families give us some time to be pampered–a great way to relax after a hard week! We only had 4 air mattresses in the Rv, so the girls rotated nights of using them.

Anyways, on July 4th (Saturday) we spoke at masses and then headed to the house of a girl that we met earlier at morning Mass. She invited us over for a cookout and fireworks! It was crazy…every single house in that neighborhood set off loads of fireworks! Afterwards, we were set on seeing a movie…but, when we got to the theatre…it was closed. So, instead–we headed to Buffalo Wild Wings for a night of blazin’ challenge fun!

It’s hard to believe that we are half-way done. It feels like just yesterday that we were training in San Bernadin0 in the cabin! Cheryl, who was with us for two weeks, left last night. We are sure gonna miss her! But, we also picked up Andrea for two weeks. She actually goes to my school…so, that is pretty cool.

You know…it’s kind of entertaining how so many things that you would never do before…become the absolute norm on Crossroads. We think nothing of spending 15 minutes every night before we go to bed catching all the bugs that entered the Rv during the day, or taking our toothbrush and toothpaste into Walmart. Shameless!

Thanks to everyone for all the prayers! They truly are making a difference. My blisters are pretty much healed. They left some scars…but, that was to be expected. I did in fact lose a total of 6 toenails. They look a bit gross. In fact, my feet look deformed–but, what can you do? I mean…I AM walking across America–right?

Sidenote: So many people stop us on the side of the road to see if we are okay. We tell them yes…and that we are walking. However, Kelsey and I noticed that if you tell someone you are walking across the country–it doesn’t register in their brain…so, they just say: “Oh, ok.” and they smile and drive on. BUT, if you say: We are walking across America. The normal response is: “What? That’s crazy! No way!” And it usually starts up a conversation. Interesting…huh?

Well, I wish I had time to write more…but, I am soooooooo tired. Hopefully, we will have internet in Kansas City this coming weekend…so, I’ll post some pictures and do another update.

Remember, I’m always praying for my supporters. May God bless you always!

Until next time, Michelle

5th week and no coffee… June 21, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michelle @ 9:46 pm

Well, the fourth week of walking has concluded! We are currently in Denver, Colorado. Not a bad city, actually. I’m really enjoying the area. So, I would say it’s on my list of possible places to move after graduation.

I walked the most miles on Thursday than I have all summer. 17 miles. I had to work up to it by gradually increasing my miles each day. I started with 8.5 miles on Monday of this past week. My feet (with healing blisters) needed to get used to a different set of shoes. We walked for about 12.5 hours on Thursday. A bit of a longer shift than usual. But, because we had to be in Denver on Friday for filming—we couldn’t get any walking done. So, poor night shift went out at midnight and walked until 4pm the next day! Talk about troopers!

On Saturday night in Denver after the Masses, one of the families in town had a bbq/party for us. One of my sorority sisters from my previous college, Katie, came to the party and then her and I went to hang out! It was awesome getting to see her. We went for Boba tea and then to her house to watch a movie. Earlier that day…the team went downtown with the film crew to get some city shots. It was a long and exhausting day.

The host family we stayed with in Denver was an awesome couple…who actually–the guy, JD, previously walked with and worked for Crossroads. So, it was really neat getting to hear his stories and experiences.

For the fifth week…Josh put me on night shift. I was pretty excited for this since I didn’t get to finish out my last chance of night shift a few weeks ago…due to those ridiculous blisters. Oh, by the way–as a team, we all gave up coffee for the summer. And actually–we don’t really consume much caffeine at all. So, we get our energy from prayers…and water!

Jessica, David, Chris and I walked. Normally, I don’t really fear anything. But, this past week in Colorado–the moon was MIA! So, it was absolutely pitch black near the Rockies…and to tell you the truth–I was petrified! It’s crazy to think that a bear or mountain lion could just pop out at any time! The best part…we have no clue how we’d handle it. So, we just keep on praying and chugging along. Miles go much faster at night…because all you think about is getting back to the van as fast as possible.

By the way…thanks to everyone for all the prayers. Seriously…without them–this walk would be so miserable. It’s weird how you can feel your body getting stronger. I actually didn’t think I was that weak before I came on this trip–but now, I realize how much more I still have left to grow.

Today is the 27th…and we’re spending the weekend in North Platte, Nebraska. Thursday of this past week was quite interesting. So, morning mass was a little bit later than usual–11:15am. So, on night shift…we had a longer shift to walk. Well, when we got to Mass–Father decided that we needed to go to the local abortion clinic and pray. So, we did. It was the smallest clinic I’ve ever seen. The coolest part: a pregnancy resource center was next door! Talk about contradiction. After the clinic, Father took us out to lunch. Yummy! Back at the church we had confession and met these awesome college students from Totus Tuus! We keep running into them wherever we go. They’re an awesome group!

Thursday night we slept in the parking lot of this church that looked like a log cabin! Night shift made it through the ENTIRE Rockies in like 14 hours. Talk about hardcore! At Mass on Friday morning, a random family asked us to meet them at their cabin for a pancake breakfast. Lots of needed breaks this past week! Friday we needed to get in as many miles as possible…and we were hoping to get to Loveland, Colorado…because we are about a day behind. So, we did a lot of running. But, on our breaks–we ventured down to the river where we climbed rocks! So much fun! Kelsey and I have decided that we love walking in the rain…because you just feel much more hardcore! haha. But, wet shoes are no fun.

We haven’t had any constant internet this past week…so, it has been hard to keep this updated. But, I got some fun pictures last week that I’ll hopefully be able to post within this next week. Right now I’m at one of the host family’s houses. We have three this weekend—so, we all got split up. North Platte is a small town…so, Jessica, Kelsey and I only have two masses to speak at this weekend! Whoa! Compare that to Sacramento’s 10!

Anyways, I better get back to the movie–we’re working on some team bonding tonight. Oh, I forgot—today was a lot of fun. Our host family took us out to play putt-putt and to ride go-carts. Something I haven’t done since I was like 8 or 9. Craziness.

Well, next week is the 4th of July and we’ll also be in Omaha/Lincoln…AND it’ll be 20 days until my 21st birthday! I think the guys may take me out.

Until next time, Michelle

Is that a bush or a deer? June 11, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michelle @ 3:08 pm

Well, our third week of walking is coming to a close! We are currently still in Ely, Nevada at the KOA because campgrounds are hard to come by on HWY 50…so, we’ve been here for 3 nights now. We are actually about to drive to Delta, Utah in 30 minutes…but, I wanted to get a quick post up before I made breakfast.

On Monday, Josh put me on night shift…I was kinda excited about this because I’ve only been on day shift thus far. So, I tried to sleep all day Monday, but that didn’t really happen. I think we left around 10pm to start walking…but, our start point was like 2 hours away. So, Chris and I officially started walking at 12:08am. Let me tell you—it is the weirdest feeling ever to be on the loneliest highway in America…walking…in the pitch black. Surprisingly, I wasn’t scared at all. But, you kind of get dillusional…like your body is awake, but your mind is asleep. When the sun rises, it’s the opposite–your body is alseep, but your mind is awake.

A Few Days Later: Well, I could only get through 2 nights of walking because of my blisters. So much for those amazing shoes I bought…they suck! I spent all day Wednesday and Thursday at the Rv park doing laundry and cooking. I had to do something to pull my weight since I couldn’t walk! On Friday the 12th, we had to take Josh and David to the airport…and then pick up Dave from the airport. Josh and David went back to Kentucky for a few days for a youth conference. So, Dave came in to help out with the walking since Chris was the only guy left here. While we were waiting for Dave to get here…we parked the Rv in a Walmart parking…so, us girls went shopping for the first time in weeks! (I bought another Jodi Picoult book!)

We stayed in Salt Lake City, Utah this weekend with another awesome home schooling family! I’m kind of in my glory with all these homeschoolers we keep meeting. It’s a lot of fun to talk about old home schooling days! Jessica and I were assigned to St. Joseph…because Jess can sorta speak Spanish and we had three Spanish masses this weekend. Well, the communication aspect was becoming a problem when people wanted to give us their prayer intentions. I felt really bad that I couldn’t correspond with anyone. :-( I guess I should have taken Spanish classes instead of American Sign Language???!

Today is Wednesday the 17th…if you are curious. I started this post and had it saved for a few days. I just didn’t get a chance to update it this weekend. I started walking again on Monday…after my dad overnighted my old tennis shoes. I only walked like 8.5 miles on Monday and 6.5 yesterday (because of thunder storms and hail)…but, I guess it is good to start somewhere!

At the church Bridget was speaking at this weekend…a man gave her bags and bags of bandages and such. He included this package of stuff called: 2nd Skin for blisters. It is AMAZING. Basically, it is like a wet-gooey bandaid that you put on raw skin. Love it! Oh…and the lost toenail count is officially= 4 whole, 2 ripped. Craziness.

Well, Josh and David get back today…it’s the last night the core team will be together as a whole until the last week of this walk. Sad story! I can’t believe the 4th week of walking is half-way done. We are a bit behind on miles…like 80. But, I’m sure we’ll make it up.

My phone has decided that it really loves central time…so, every day it switches from mountain…and everyday I have to manually change it back. So weird! Oh, btw: AT&T sucks in Utah and Nevada. Just saying…there is no reception anywhere!

I suppose I should probably go and organize my duffel bag—it gets to a point every week where I am just shoving things in and out because of the lack of time. By the weekend…everything is lost and wrinkled! Oh…and if anyone is wondering—I think we are in vernal, Utah. That v is supposed to be capitalized…but, somehow the shift button and v don’t work at the same time on Chris’ macbook. hmmm….

Until next time, Michelle

The Second Week… June 7, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michelle @ 11:20 pm

Wow, I can’t believe we are already finished with our second week of walking! I think that most of us agree with the fact that the first week was the longest week of our entire lives. This second week proved to be a bit more challenging with walkers being out of commission. Rita has been sick, and Jessica and I have been out of walking because of blisters. I only missed a day and a half…but, I feel horrible for leaving the other walkers hanging. Although, I must admit–my blisters (18 of them total!) were getting utterly out of control and obstructing my walking sequences.

We lost two walkers this weekend—they had to go back to their normal lives. Well, Elizabeth left on Friday and Damien is leaving tonight. It’s kinda sad. I mean—you bond with these people…and then they have to leave. I really cannot imagine what it is going to feel like after three months with my group.

So far, people keep asking me what I think the hardest part of this journey is. Yes, the blisters are ridiculous and painful, yes, the heat makes you sick to your stomach, yes, the strenuous hills make your legs ache, yes, not having a shower every day and wearing the same shirt 5 days a week is gross, yes, sleeping in an RV with 7 other people is cramped, but…I think the worst part is not knowing when or if you are going to have even 10 minutes to yourself. This past semester, I had “Me” time every day for atleast an hour. This gave me time to unwind, think about the day’s events and plan for tomorrow. But, on Crossroads…plans could, can, and do change every hour. It is a very humbling experience.

We’ve spent this weekend in Reno, Nevada with an awesome homeschooling host family. They had a big potluck party for us on Friday…that was a lot of fun! Yesterday–Saturday, we went to the abortion mill to pray. It was the first Saturday of the month, so the community said a huge Rosary. I heard the doctor at that mill was insane…like turning on the sprinklers on pro-lifers and playing crude music really loud. But, we didn’t get to experience any of this.

We are driving to Ely, Nevada tonight to stay at a KOA. I must say–we are quite partial to these campgrounds. I’m actually starting to really love this whole camping thing. We went to this store called Cabela’s last night. It is similar to a Bass Pro Shop. I bought some nylon socks and then Josh, David, Rita, Kelsey and I played this shooting range game. Pretty cool!

Until next time, Michelle

The Next Few Days… June 3, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michelle @ 2:40 pm

No matter how many stories former walkers told us, we could not even begin to imagine what the next full week was going to hold. The craziest terrain, extreme heat conditions, and the worst of the worse blisters were in our future.

I was assigned to day shift this past week. I was pretty excited about that because I knew the scenery was going to be amazing as we walked through California. We walked through everything from cities to farmland to wine country to I don’t even remember. It’s only been a week, but feels like eternity!

I took the very first walking shift of the summer for the central walk and I went with Rita and Josh. We only had time to finish 10 miles, while the second shift did an additional 5 miles. The first day wasn’t so bad…the next should be a piece of cake. (Ha! I was wrong!)

Basically all my days are running together…but, I do remember some key events. On the second day—we got lost…several times. So, we walked like 14 miles in the wrong direction. The first night of walking…we couldn’t make it to an RV park so we had to sleep in a Walmart parking lot. What an adventure! We thought it was open 24 hours…but, we were wrong—so, the whole bathroom thing was interesting. Oh, also the stove and fridge in the RV were broken this week. Not to mention…we didn’t fill up the fresh water tank and Crossroads never uses the bathrooms in the RV for sanitary reasons. Good stuff.

Tuesday and Wednesday of this week we were able to spend the night in RV parks, so we got showers. Thursday night, however, was spent in the parking lot of a church. We go to daily Mass…and at one of the churches during the beginning of the week, the Parish gave us 72 servings of Sirloin Burger soup. Haha…the team can’t wait to eat it.

So…moving on to the exciting events. On Wednesday, it was over 100 degrees and I almost had a heat stroke…so, I had to sit the rest of the day out. Lets see—on Thursday evening we were in the mountains and had no cell phone reception. It gets better though—we got stuck in the SNOW in California in May! Haha. Josh decided he wanted to touch snow, so we drove down a forest road and before we knew it…the van is only a front-wheel drive and the snow was too soft. Bad combination!

Hmm…well, on Friday night we walked passed Lake Tahoe and we decided that we couldn’t miss out on jumping in. So we did…at 9 pm that night. It was actually pretty refreshing. I mean, we were freezing on the 2.5 hour drive back…but, it was definitely worth it.

We spent this past weekend in Sacramento—we had to drive back to the city since we made it to the Stateline on Friday night. During the weekend we stayed in this Catholic school that had a shower. I ended up speaking at about 10 Masses on Sunday and one on Saturday! You can’t say I’m not honing my public speaking skills.

We’ve been walking in Nevada since Monday on Route 50 (also known as the loneliest road in America???) On Monday we got stuck in a huge hailstorm and on Tuesday we got stuck in a huge wind/dust storm. Oh my…the excitement never ends! Anyways, I’m hoping to update again at the next RV park we go to—it’s rare.

Lets just say that I never treasured hot water pouring from a faucet more than I do now that I’m on Crossroads…

Until next time, Michelle

First weekend: San Francisco May 25, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michelle @ 5:40 am

The weekend is coming to a close…and the beginning of our walk is near! I think that all of us are extremely anxious to get the walk started. I officially have 3 guys and 5 girls on my team. Everyone is absolutely fabulous! Our personalities seem to flow well together. We’ve only been together for less than a week—but, our bond is already strong.

We arrived (after 12 hours in the RV) in San Francisco on Friday night. They split us up between four host families. Bridget, Kelsey, Elizabeth and I were put with this absolutely sweet family with a gorgeous home! We even got to sleep in beds (and got a daily shower!).

The weekend started out shaky…but, is finishing up quite nicely. Early Saturday morning we headed to Mass. Afterwards we went for coffee (which as a team, we have decided to give up for the summer—thanks to the healthy influence of our walk leader, Josh, and his brother David…great guys btw!).  We said the rosary in front of Planned Parenthood and the camera crew filmed it for the documentary/recruiting video.

Sidetrack: The Crossroads’ guys asked me to fly to the other walks during the summer to get footage for the documentary—that’s gonna be fun. :-)

Anyways, after the morning activities, one of our host families–Paul–took us to the beach/Pacific ocean so we could run in the water! It was super cold and we got sand everywhere! Finally, we kicked off our walk with a special and quick walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Tons of supporters came out and walked with us across the bridge. :-)

On Saturday—we had amazing mexican food for lunch. My burrito was to die for! The evening was set aside for Masses. Jessica and I were sent to this HUGE church downtown to give our speech. We nailed it! Last night we went over to Paul’s house where his wife cooked AMAZING Lebanese food! We also made an emergency trip to Target and Marshalls since I didn’t have a skirt. Oops.

Today, Sunday, was INSANELY filled with Mass talks. Dave and I had 5 to do today. Can’t say we’re not getting special graces! Right now, we are hanging out with most of our host families…enjoying some food and fellowship.

Tomorrow morning…we start the walk officially! Here’s to blisters and a farmer’s tan!

Until next time, Michelle

Night 1: Sleep time May 20, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Michelle @ 3:14 pm

I was picked up from the airport around 4pm, along with a few other walkers, and Brendan took us to a parking lot where the RV was stationed. We waited in the RV for the remainder of the walkers to arrive. This waiting time proved to be a great way for everyone to meet each other. One of the girls (from the southern walk) even made playing cards out of notebook paper. Haha. (I filmed that part for my documentary!)

Oh yes, my documentary. In case you are not familiar with this—I am doing a section of my senior thesis this summer. I have chosen to create a documentary of the central walk. I’ve invested in some pretty good equipment and can’t wait to get the show on the road (no pun intended!). I’ll have the entire next semester to edit and prepare my movie. Copies will be able for viewing in November.

Soooo…after everyone finally arrived (and after a bit of parking confusion—we seemed to have lost where the RV was parked a few times! Haha) we stopped for some dinner at Quiznos. The next event was our 80 mile (very bumpy!) ride to the cabin. Apparently we had to take some windy, hilly road to get here…but, I wouldn’t know since I zonked out. :-) A generous family is allowing us to stay in their cabin for the next few days. It’s really pretty here…and I was lucky to find an internet signal!

After sleeping arrangements were made…a lot of the walkers went straight to bed. Some of us stayed up to read or pray…and I just checked facebook!

Until next time, Michelle
